Lets have the right gear?

We have with us the equipment listed for our bike tour, to make our journey as comfortable as possible, starting with safety, then equipment to meet our basics needs.

Safety equipment.

Personal Location Beacon –:“Garmin Inreach Explorer 2”
A satellite communicator with an SOS for an emergency rescue (including helicopter) anywhere in the world. (Garmin paid service with live texting by satellite and live tracking).

Dog Deterrent -: “Dazer II” dog deterrent, an ultrasonic – high frequency sound transmitter to keep wild dogs at arm’s length.  (we have used the Dazer a few times to arrest charging dogs, they do not like it!)

Personal Alert Alarm-: Personal Siren, a 140 dbA frequency siren for personal protection in a public area. (hopefully will not need to activate these devices, they make us go deaf for a short time.)

Water purifiers.

Micropur -: “Micopur” tablets to treat water, a disinfectant containing chloride to kill bacteria, viruses and Giardia.  

SteriPEN -:  “SteriPEN Purifier” which uses short wave UV light to disinfect water. (destroys 99.9% of bacteria viruses & protozoa).

Water Filter -: “MSR Trailshot Microfilter” to filter cloudy or muddy water.

 

 

First Aid Kit.
 

First Aid Kit includes Antibiotics for general wound healing and dental care. (eg rabies dog bite; although we have had vaccinations for rabies we still need the after healing protection).

Assortment of Ointment’s includes: ‘Betadine’ antiseptic, ‘Stingose’ for insect stings and bits, ‘Sportique’ Road Rash Remedy Rash disinfection balm, ‘Egoderm’ oitment for itchy rashes.

Assortment of Tablets includes: Panadol, ‘Imodium Zapid’,  ‘Travacalm’ for travel sickness and Cold & Flu tablets.

Electrical Power & Gadgets

Son 28 Dynometer in front wheel hub: A bike (pedal power) charger with low friction; comes with USB Port K-Lite module (charges up to 3 watts above 10 kph (enough for mobile phones).

Power Packs x 2: High capacity 27,000 mAh to recharge mobile phones multiple times plus laptops.

Mains Power points at camping ground and hotel when available. ( with power adaptors)

Solar Panel: Venture 30 by “Goal Zero” with 7,800 mAh internal battery.

Computers: Prue loves her Apple ‘Mac Air’ while Peter sticks to his PC, a HP ‘Spectre’ 360 with a 1 TB SSD.   Both are light weight and have long battery lives.    We also have a 2 TB Portable Back Up disc and a few SD cards.

Phones: Prue loves her iPhone 11 with the 3 camera lens while Peter has an old but reliable iPhone 7

Camera: A Panasonic Lumix TZ220 with a 1 Inch MOS sensor and 30 Optical Zoom, not bad for a pocketable camera.    Video by a Go Pro Hero 4.

 

Tools & Spare Parts.

Spares includes Wheel Spokes, Spare Bike Chain  and 4 sets of Quick Links, Spare Tyre plus Tyre Boots for minor side wall repairs.
Full set of spare cables for brake and gears.
Full Set Disc Brake Pads and Chain Dry Lube Oil

Tools include Spoke Adjuster, Chain Wear Indicator and Chain Breaker, mini Chain Whip, Cassette Socket along with 11mm Alan key driver          (used also for remove the bike pedals).  Also Spanner & Screw drivers, Alan Key set & plyers.

Misc includes Super Glues, assortment of nuts & bolts, worm drive clamps, bundle of cable ties

Misc. Equipment

RFID Travel money belts, RFID Credit Card pouch, hand antiseptic wash and wipes,  sunscreen 50, ‘Bushmans’ insect repellant, ‘Kathmandu’ Pocket Day packs, sewing / mending kit .

Bike Locks

We have a selection of bike locks and select the grade of security lock depending on our location and if the bike will be left unattended.

The D Locks are the ‘Kryptonite Evolution’  New Yorkers with harden steel for leaving the bikes unattended, the D is secured to steel posts.

Also we use the cable locks to pass through the wheels and keep the bikes frames together.

The best deterrent is the bikes look too heavy for a quick getaway!

Clothing

We wear predominantly the “Ice Breaker” brand clothing, including Socks, Underwear, Base Layers and Mid Layers.

All are the fine Merino Wool to the New Zealand high quality.                  

For our outer rain shells, Prue wears a MacPac ‘GoreTex lined’ coat,  Peter wears a MacPac ‘EVent lined’ coat.  

More Clothing

We also wear ‘Ice Breaker’ Beanies on cold nights.                                        We wear “Coolmax” sock liners for sleeping.                                                    Outer Layers include ‘Katmandu’; ‘Montane’ and ‘Berghaus’ jumpers.

Maps & Travel Guides

‘Lonely Planet’ Travel Guides are a valuable resource for tourist information.                                                                                                     Local hard copy maps are recommended as electronic devices can go flat.
